How does Forensic Restoration differ from commercial or archival restoration?

Forensic audio is simply the application of audio technology to the areas of criminal and civil law, security, and other matters of public interest. With other forms of audio restoration the overall goal is to reduce noise without affecting the musicality of the audio content. If there is a choice between reducing noise and adversely affecting a performance, the performance always has to win. With forensic restoration the noise reduction tools can be pushed much harder. The main goal here is to make the content more intelligible. The “purity of tone” on a 911 call isn’t as important as it is on a 78 rpm recording of a blues guitarist. So while much of the same high quality equipment is used for all forms of audio restoration here at Osiris Studio, the technique and overall strategy used for forensic restoration project is very different.  

REALITY

Osiris Studio employs the best, state of the art equipment and practices currently available regarding audio restoration, however it’s important to note that modern TV and film have created somewhat unrealistic expectations of what can and cannot be done. While every engineer on the planet wishes they had that “enhance” button they show on CSI, this sadly does not exist. There is a limit to what audio restoration is currently capable of. While we will do everything possible to clean up the sound of a recording, in the end that may not be enough.
